Top 3 Leading Options for Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a syndrome that has increasingly become more prevalent over the past few years. This syndrome is one that produces chronic widespread pain, which often means that the person diagnosed with fibromyalgia is more likely than not to experience additional symptoms caused by this chronic pain, such as disrupted sleep, abnormal pain processing (by the brain), and psychological grief.  When someone receives a diagnosis of fibromyalgia, they are going to need various forms of support as they are going to experience chronic pain that can become so severe that they can be affected both emotionally and socially.

Leading Options for Fibromyalgia
Although there is currently no cure for fibromyalgia, there are a few options available that can help to lessen the chronic pain as well as ease the accompanying ailments that are known to occur in someone diagnosed with fibromyalgia.

Fibromyalgia Diet – Try to eat the healthiest foods possible, this will help keep your body strong so it can better handle all the various fibromyalgia symptoms that come hand-in-hand with this diagnosis.

Exercise – This one is a bit tricky because too much exercise tends to worsen fibromyalgia symptoms, while too little exercise tends to make the muscles weaker, which can also worsen the effects felt when one has this syndrome.

Relaxation – Learning to use a few relaxation skills can make a big difference. Simply allow your body to relax while taking slow, deep breaths at least once a day.

Bottom Line
If you or someone you know has been recently diagnosed with this syndrome, it is critical that they seek assistance with fibromyalgia as soon as they possibly can. Although the above suggestions have been proven to be very helpful when it comes to managing this painful syndrome, these are only a few of the options currently available so it is essential that you check with a doctor who specializes in fibromyalgia so they can make a proper diagnosis as well as a course of action. If you have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia, in Lakewood, Colorado you’ll find the services of Dr. Scott Brown, a chiropractor who helps relieve fibromyalgia using some of the best techniques available today.

Now that allergy season is here, what is going on?

This allergy season in Colorado could be bad this year due high precipitation, followed by a quick shift to warm weather. The result is a veritable plethora of tree pollen and mold. Generally, allergy seasons have been getting longer and more challenging, even though pollen counts and allergens vary widely from region to region. Studies are showing a link between warming temperatures and a longer ragweed pollen season.  Lewis Ziska of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, says “the ragweed season is now 27 days longer in the northernmost areas of North America, largely because winter starts later and ends earlier, extending the time for pollen-bearing plants to thrive.”

Allergy symptoms include: red, itchy eyes, nasal drip, sneezing, hacking cough, stuffiness, hay fever, allergic rhinitis, and asthmatic aggravation.

Common allergens: ragweed, pollen, molds, dust, pet dander, cockroaches, chemicals, PERSONAL CARE and CLEANING PRODUCTS.

Did you know: lower oxygen levels corresponding to higher carbon dioxide levels are an aggravating factor to allergies? Multiple studies have shown an increase in hospitalizations after thunderstorms.

Why do some people develop allergies and some don’t? Allergies are a reaction to foreign particles that enter the body and are a signal that your immune system is under duress. When an allergen enters the body, plasma cells activate Immunoglobulin E (IgE) which is an antibody. Antibodies are our immune systems soldiers that defend us against threat. These IgE antibodies attach to mast cells in the skin and mucous membranes where they slow the inflammation. In the process there is a chemicals (histamines, leukotrienes, and prostaglandins) that cause those nasty allergy symptoms.

Clinical Gem: People can have allergies from childhood on and some who have never had allergies can get them later in life. The immune system can be sensitized at any stage of life. Allergies may be far more common than is believed, and they may even underlie many common diseases.

Cleanliness may NOT be next to Godliness. It may be next to devilishness. Multiple studies, again, are leading researchers to contend that “civilized” cleaning with chemical products and our attention to sterilizing everything to get rid of germs and dirt  is actually lowering our immunity by preventing the body from telling the difference between a real threat and something like dust and pollen. By exposing our children to the normal enviromental stimulants like mud and dirt, they develop natural immunities which carry over into adulthood. It is clear now that exposure to dirt improves your immune system.

WHAT TO DO!

Eliminating allergies takes more than just a pill. You must make sometimes uncomfortable dietary changes and avoid potential triggering factors. Status quo medical treatment during misery season involves consumption of antihistamines, nasal inhalants, and eye drops. Relief is short lived and the side effects include: dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, nausea, vomiting, restlessness, moodiness, blurred vision, confusion, and painful urination. You can see that the cure can be worse than the disease. Conventional allergy testing, whether done through the blood or skin, works in only about 25 percent of people. In addition, you need to go to the doctor’s frequently, and it can take several years to work.

If you or a love one are suffering from allergies, call us today at (303) 896-7600 for a sit down with the doctor to determine if drug free chiropractic neurology presents a solution to your allergies.

Is ADHD different from ADD? Yes, and here’s how

Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) is similar to but not the same as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Both are considered co-morbid with, but not identical to, Autism and are classified on the Autistic Spectrum of conditions. Autistic spectrum disorders include but are not limited to Asperger’s Syndrome, ADD, ADHD, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), Dyslexia, Childhood Dis-integrative Disorder (CDD),Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD), and Tourette’s Syndrome. Both ADD and ADHD were unheard of just a couple of generations ago and today they are a part of every parent’s vocabulary because if their own children haven’t been classified, they know parents whose kids have been and the psychological effects on not just the child but the entire family can be profound. So ADHD and ADD are similar and part of the same Autistic Spectrum but with distinct differences in not only the area of the brain involved but also in the correct treatment.

ADD for instance typically involves an area of the brain called the parietal lobe (the lobe of the hand) and in little boys there is usually an asymmetry between the right and left parietal lobes with the right one under performing. The parietal lobe is involved with spatial awareness involving  things such as hand/eye coordination, the ability to kick a ball with precision, and academically geometric configuration. Weakness in this area leads to what has been called a “Swiss cheese” brain where pieces of information seem to fall through, resulting in poor problem solving skills and lack of coordination in sports activities. These kids can study hard and try hard but just can seem to do as well as the average kids. They may be left out of games and have poor social skills. Their ADD or attention deficit comes from not being able to perform due to the lack of processing in the very important parietal lobe.

ADHD on the other hand typically involves an area of the brain called the frontal lobe (the lobe of executive function); and in boys, there is usually an asymmetry between the right and left frontal lobes with the right lobe underperforming. The frontal lobe is involved with decisions of right vs. wrong, boundaries with other children, empathy, compassion. Weakness in this area results is the child who cannot inhibit impulses. Lying is for fun with little care about right from wrong. These kids poor academics stems from not studying due to impulses to do other things and not from lack of ability. Their poor social skills are the result of not being able to see the consequences of their behavior.

In either case, these “labels” ADD and ADHD that we are required to put on these kids are just that. Each child is and individual and these asymmetries of brain can be rectified with brain based therapies and non-pharmaceutical diet and lifestyle changes. If your child has been labeled ADD or ADHD we would like to help take the label off. Call today for a qualifying 10 minute sit-down with Dr. Brown and start the road to a peaceful life again (303) 986-7600

Dementia Speaks: Tips on age related memory loss and cognitive decline

Neurological diseases including those associated with memory loss and cognitive decline are increasing at an alarming rate. Yes, people are living longer so that accounts for some of the increase in dementia; however, it is not the whole picture. There are many more pollutants, toxins, and other stresses in advanced societies that can accelerate cognitive decline, memory loss, and dementia.

All brains are created unequal. They all have different neuron firing rates and develop different areas of plasticity (increased function). Some types of plasticity are good and some are bad. For instance, there is a process called pruning where the human brain loses some neurons so that other more useful ones can allow greater cognitive function and adaptability. As a result all brains fire differently even if they have the exact same stimulation. For instance, some individuals like liver and onions while others can’t stand them (same stimulus but entirely different perception). The typical individual loses about 54,000 neurons per day, yet some people lose up to 5 million! Regardless of our individuality, certain lifestyle choices can increase one’s chances of a high functioning cortex (brain) into our later years.

Lets see how we can help our brains to function at the highest level for the longest time:

  1. 1/3 of the glucose (blood sugar) in the body is used by the brain. A large percentage of the American population has Reactive Hypoglycemia where the glucose levels drop below optimum on a regular basis. What science now tells us is that every time a person’s blood sugar drops they are neuro-degenerating, or losing neurons. People get all the neurons that will ever have at birth and most neurons (there is some debate) will not regenerate. It is imperative for hypoglycemics to stabilize blood sugar, through proper diet and lifestyle changes, or they may accelerate memory loss, cognitive decline, and dementia.
  2. The most important neurotransmitter for memory is Acetylcholine (ACTH). One of the causes of loss of ACTH levels is lack of fats in the diet. Sadly, many Americans are led to believe that eating fats will make you fat and nothing could be farther from the truth. GOOD fats are not only essential to overall health including cardiovascular function, but they are paramount for brain health. So eat the yolk in those organic eggs, but avoid those trans-fats in the potato chips. The symptoms of ACTH deficiency are identical to those of Alzheimer’s Disease: (a) they have a loss of visual (photographic) memory – where did I put my keys? (b) they can’t understand people who speak too fast (c) they can’t count backwards from 100.

Of course there is so much more to maintaining superior brain function, but you get the idea that how we take care of ourselves has a great say so in preventing memory loss, cognitive decline, and dementia.

7 things to know about Hashimoto’s Disease and thyroid function

Early stage thyroid dysfunction is more and more prevalent and generally overlooked in the modern health care system. Most people with functional thyroid problems ( the ones that don’t show up on traditional lab tests) do NOT have primary thyroid problems. This is because thyroid function is delicately responsive to even slight changes in metabolism such as hormone imbalances, blood sugar imbalance, adrenal sluggishness, etc. In addition, more serious problems such as autoimmunity (Hashimoto’s Disease, Graves’ Disease) can cause an attack on the thyroid when there is nothing wrong with the thyroid. So what do you need to know about Hashimoto’s Disease and your thyroid function?

1. Current research now indicates that between 50% to 90% of Hypothyroid (under-active thyroid) patients have Hashimoto’s Disease. This accounts for 7-8% of the female population of the U.S. 52% of this 7-8% will have other autoimmune diseases such as Lupus, Multiple Sclerosis, Diabetes, Rheumatoid Arthritis, and Celiac Disease.

2. Suspect autoimmune diseases when:

  • you have symptoms of hypothyroidism (tired, sluggish, hair falling out, weight gain, fatigue)
  • mixed symptoms of hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism ( racing heart, weight loss, anxiety)
  • you are non-responsive to thyroid medications
  • your Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) test is elevated
  • the doctor is consistently increasing the dosage of thyroid hormones
  • and you are NOT overweight

3. Every time you get tired right after lunch, you have lost part of your thyroid. Understand that this may not be due to a thyroid problem per se but due to other metabolic weakness such as Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) or Insulin Resistance (high blood sugar and pre-Diabetes).

4. If the problem is autoimmune Hashimoto’s Disease, which is determined by special lab testing, you can never eat gluten again. This is a very difficult lifestyle change for most people. It is possible to be exposed to gluten and not feel the symptoms for 8 months. This is a very insidious problem, but there are supplements that you can take to help your body recover from the exposure faster.

5. Those with autoimmune Hashimoto’s Disease cannot take bromelin or pancreatic enzymes because it will literally digest their stomachs.

6. Hashimoto’s patients cannot take Iodine supplements, even if they are iodine deficient, because Iodine acts like fuel to a fire and will worsen the autoimmune attack. These folks can have foods with iodine however.

7. Nutrients that have been shown to support the thyroid include selenium, zinc, vitamin D3, ashwagandha, and gugulu. However, those with autoimmune thyroid may not benefit from these supplements because the condition is not a thyroid problem but an immune attack on the thyroid.

8. (Bonus tip) For Hashimoto’s patients, the immune system must be supported first and foremost with lifestyle changes and supplements such as glutathoine, superoxide dismutase,Vitamin D3, and T-Helper Cell (TH-1) and/or  T- Helper Cell -2, )TH-2 stimulators (dependent on individual lab findings).

How 15 minutes of exercise can add 3 years to your life

I think the following recent Lancet article says it about about as succinctly as possible. Please pay attention!

The Lancet, 1 Oct. 2011

Minimum amount of physical activity for reduced mortality and extended life expectancy: a prospective cohort study:

Conclusion: 15 minutes per day or 90 minutes per week of moderate exercise might be of benefit to individuals with cardiovascular problem and can add 3 years of life expectancy.

“Every additional 15 minutes of daily exercise beyond the minimum amount of 15 minutes a day further reduced all-cause mortality by 4 percent, and all-cancer mortality by 1 percent. These benefits were applicable to all age groups and both sexes, and to those with cardiovascular disease risks.

Individuals who were inactive had a 17 percent increased risk of mortality compared with individuals in the low-volume group.”

Researchers have measured the biochemical changes that occur during exercise, and found alterations in more than 20 different metabolites. Some of these compounds help you burn calories and fat, while others help stabilize your blood sugar, among other things. Essentially, being of a healthy weight and exercising regularly creates a healthy feedback loop that optimizes and helps maintain healthy glucose and insulin levels through optimization of insulin receptor sensitivity. And, as I’ve mentioned before, insulin resistance—primarily driven by excessive consumption of refined sugars and grains along with lack of exercise—is the underlying factor of nearly all chronic disease that can take years off your life.

Exercise Tips for Those with Chronic Health Problems

Even if you’re chronically ill, exercise is especially important. If you have inflammatory diseases such as Rheumatiod Arthritis, Lupus, M.S.,Cancer or any other chronic disease, you will  need to modify your exercise routine accordingly, taking into account your metabolism, stamina and and motivation limitations. This means you may at times need to exercise at a lower level, or for shorter periods, but you need to make a good effort to keep yourself mobile and moving. Even inflammatory diseased patients should aim for a minimum of 2-3 hours of exercise a week, at moderate intensity, to boost their chances of successful recovery.

Don’t over do it. Always listen to your body and take a break when you need it. Always take time to rest. But even exercising for just a few minutes a day is better than not exercising at all.

In the event you are suffering from autoimmune disorders (where the body identifies certain organs as foreign invaders) or any compromise in your immune system, you may want to exercise in your home instead of going to the gym. And remember that exercise will ultimately help to boost your immune system, so it’s very important to continue with your program in spite of debilitating inflammatory conditions or chronic problems.

Chiropractic Neurologist Speaks: Just Say No To Stress

Health problems from Allergies to Xenophobia are either caused or made worse by stress. That includes Depression/Anxiety, Heart Disease, Gastrointestinal Disease, Diabetes Hypertension, Obesity, Insomnia and symptoms such as:

  • TMJ problems
  • Memory loss
  • Cognitive loss
  • Musculoskeletal pains in the neck, back, extremities, and head

Now, some stress is good and necessary for growth and development, but it is also something that you encounter every day, so you simply must have tools to deal with it. (If you want to be happy and healthy)

Most stressed out people have weak adrenals (the fight or flight glands a the top of your kidneys).  It‘s the result of racing through life with a constantly aroused sympathetic nervous system. When the body has been under adrenal stress for a long time, it body produces excess stress hormones. Eventually, this causes the adrenal glands, to become depleted. There is a phenomenon called “crosstalk” and the weak adrenals cause impairment in the thyroid gland, which can cause a further decline in libido, energy, memory  and mood and is especially damaging to women.

You can prevent this from happening by making a few simple lifestyle changes:

  1. Take time to shut down – quiet time, meditation, gardening, reading. Find what calms you and make it a priority daily
  2. Eat healthy. Most of us know when we are eating poorly and do it anyway. Eat smaller portions more often to keep your blood sugar balanced and reduce stress on your adrenal glands.
  3. Do not skip breakfast. It starts your day off on the wrong foot and destroys part of your brain and thyroid when you do it.
  4. Take a vacation ASAP and as often as is financially possible
  5. Don’t sweat the small stuff – just take 5 minutes to “get things off your chest” to spouse or trusted friend. Don’t let anger fester
  6. Don’t waste time on “surfing the internet” or watching a lot of T.V. Make sure your time counts so that when you go home at the end of the day, you can relax with your favorite calming activity. Hint: my wife and I unwind by playing with our Bull Terrier Tuki.
  7. Rigidity makes you a stiff: be flexible and know that everything is not going to be perfect in your day – learn to go with the flow
  8. Be introspective: know when you are wired and turn off the stress electricity. Deep breathing exercises where you take 10 deep breaths with the exhale being twice as long as the inhale
  9. Be a people person. Laugh, sing, and dance
  10. Get sleep. Don’t try to cheat yourself. Most people need between six and eight hours of sleep per night.

Lakewood Chiropractic Neurologist for Gut and Heart Health Speaks

What Does Your Gut Have to do With Your Heart?

We have known for decades the powerful relationship between diet and heart disease. But the latest research is indicating that other factors in your body determine how your heart will perform but instead of just what you put in your body, we now must take into account the makeup of your gut flora that allows you to process that diet. According a study of  nearly 2,000 people, bacteria in your gut break down lecithin, a fat found in meat, eggs, dairy and other animal products along with baked goods and dietary supplements, and its metabolite choline, it leads to the creation of a by-product called trimethylamine N-oxide or TMAO.

TMAO causes fatty plaque deposits to form within arteries (atherosclerosis), and so increased TMAO  in your blood causes a greater your risk of heart disease. It’s not known which types of gut bacteria lead to the formation of TMAO, but one theory is that probiotics may  buffer the effect and thereby help prevent heart disease. Probiotics have already been found to be favorable to lowering blood pressure as well as influence the activity of hundreds of your genes, helping them to express in a  manner that protects against disease.

So it is highly probable that gut bacteria and diet would work together in ways that influence your health.

How important is proper gut function? Let me count the ways:

  1. Protects against over-growth of other microorganisms that  cause disease
  2. Digestion of food and nutrient absorption including fats and carbohydrates
  3. Produces vitamins, absorbs minerals and eliminates toxins
  4. Prevents allergies
  5. Maintainsnatural defenses
  6. Prevents Metabolic syndrome (pre-Diabetes)
  7. Affects mood and cognition
  8. Memory, and behavior
  9. Prevents Celiac Disease
  10. Prevents weight gain

Your gut bacteria are a reflection of your lifestyle. If you eat a lot of carbohydrates, sugars, refined grains and packaged foods,  your gut bacteria are going to be compromised (more bad bacteria and not enough good bacteria) because these foods usually degrade healthy intestinal flora and allow bad bacteria and yeast to take over. Your gut bacteria are also very sensitive to:

  • Chlorinated water
  • Antibacterial soap
  • Agricultural chemicals
  • Pollution
  • Antibacterial soap
  • Agricultural chemicals
  • Antibiotics

In a modern, healthy food challenged society of packaged, canned, processed, and contaminate food sources, it is a good idea to take high quality probiotic supplements. Probiotics supply you with the good bacteria to fight the bad bacteria. If you aren’t eating fermented foods such as kefir, miso, tempeh, and sauerkraut, taking a high-quality probiotic supplement is necessary. I have a number of different brands from capsules to powders that I use personally and recommend to my patients. This is not a guarantee that you will not get sick but it is a hedge to the bet that some critters will come along and try to rain on your stomach parade.

Food Allergies, Gluten Sensitivity, and Thyroid Function

HOW FOOD ALLERGIES DEVELOP

  • Usually from a threat reaction of the immune system.
  • The immune system sends out inflammatory chemicals to meet threats
  • When prolonged, the inflammation causes impaired digestion and leaky gut
  • The immune system attacks the leaked food particles (like gluten) floating in the blood and eventually attacks other tissues (such as the thyroid)
  • This is called an autoimmune reaction

THE GLUTEN FREE TO-DO LIST

Primarily base your diet on lean proteins, vegetables, raw dairy products, grains seeds and flours (that are naturally gluten-free) which include:

  1. Rice (brown preferable)
  2. Flax and amaranth seed
  3. Non-GMO corn
  4. Sorghum
  5. Quinoa

HOW TO INCREASE GLUTEN-FREE FIBER IN YOUR DIET

  • Make salads and dips with peas, beans, lentil, and quinoa
  • Add nuts and seeds to everything
  • Eat high fiber fruits and leave the skins on pears, apples, and peaches
  • Use brown rice and brown rice flower
  • Leave the peels on vegetables
  • Use high fiber flours such as buckwheat, garbanzo beans, whole beans, quinoa, and amaranth

THYROID AND GLUTEN

  • Gluten sensitivities and Celiac are among the most common things associated with thyroid dysfunction  because of  inflammation
  • Inflammation leads to leaky gut
  • Leaky gut leads to immune dysregulation
  • Immune failure leads to autoimmune disease
  • In America, 50%+ of thyroid sufferers actually have Hashimoto’s Autoimmune Disease but are not tested. Why?

HASHIMOTO’S DISEASE’S LITTLE KNOWN FACTS

Drug therapy for immune problems, at this time, is ineffective and often causes worse problems than the condition. So thyroid hormone levels (TSH)are treated with drug therapy while the immune reaction slowly destroys the thyroid. This is why the dosage of thyroid hormone has to be frequently increased

WHY ARE THYROID SUFFERERS NOT ROUTINELY TESTED FOR AUTOIMMUNITY?

Because the standard treatment (steroid hormones) causes worse problems than the autoimmune disease (Hashimoto’s). The only solution is to enhance the immune system, and for Hashimoto’s individuals, a gluten-free diet is mandatory.

HOW DO WE PROVE WE ARE GLUTEN SENSITIVE?

Gas, bloating, heart burn, skin rashes, headaches, achiness, soreness, constipation, diarrhea, and weight gain can all be indications that someone may have food intolerances. It is only when we go on a gluten-free diet for 2-4 weeks, and then add foods back one at a time, that we can prove to ourselves that we are or are not gluten sensitive

GLUTEN SENSITIVITY CAN EXACERBATE

  • Obesity
  • Type 2 Diabetes
  • Cancer
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Cholesterol abnormalities

DID YOU KNOW?

  • One gluten exposure can lead to 6-8 months of immunological response
  • Gluten sensitivity and Celiac Disease have no known “cure” but can be effectively managed
  • Despite your best efforts, you will have accidental exposures
  •  Epidemiologic studies demonstrated a strong dose dependent relationship between grain intake and schizophrenia.

Be sure about your gluten issues

What if I don’t have any symptoms of gluten intolerance?

According to research, 1/3 of Americans of European heritage are neuro-degenerating (bran rot) every time they eat gluten. Unlike those with gluten related gastrointestinal sensitivities like Crohn’s Disease, this neuro-degeneration occurs without causing any symptoms. There are genetic tests available to determine if you have the gene.

Where is gluten hiding?

In an earlier post, we talked about the gluten sources that everyone knows about such as wheat, oats, barley, rye, spelt, and kamut. The things you have to watch out for are the sneaky ones listed below. The saddest of all for many people (especially guys) is beer. Alas, there is gluten free beer that can suffice but you will probably have to get used to it. I also worry that some of them put corn syrup which is worse for blood sugar (Diabeteics and Hypoglycemics) than real sugar

  • Beer (cheers!)
  • Food starches
  • Soy sauce
  • Food emulsifiers
  • Food stabilizers
  • Artificial food coloring
  • Malt extract, flavor, syrup
  • Dextrins

Reading the label isn’t always enough

The Governmental Accountability Office (GAO) in October 2008 gave the FDA a failing grade when on preventing false and misleading labeling. This includes gluten. Be very careful that the food you eat has no cross contamination from transportation in containers that have carried gluten and not been thoroughly cleaned.

Cyrex labs can help

Even if you are not showing symptoms of overall gluten sensitivity, we can find out exactly which foods you are allergic to.This small piece of knowledge can change your life.

Still not convinced you have a problem with gluten?

HLA-DQ gene testing is done with a swab and it just to see if you have the genes putting you at risk. You do this with a kit at home and it is easy.  If you have the gluten sensitive genes, you can be neuro-degenerating even though you have not symptoms.

What excites me!

Since I first started 30 years ago, technology, science, and the internet make truths available to anyone in the world. In the last few years, dedicated groups are making great strides in cleaning up our internal environment in spite of the powerful business interests opposing us.

Call today for an appointment to see if gluten is wrecking your life (303) 986-7600
